Expert Reviews

Wine snobs may scoff - but this is an absolutely fantastic drink for the price, as are many of the wines in the Yalumba Y Series range. It ticks all the boxes when it comes to an everyday drinking wine; it is fresh and vibrant, crisp and clean, determinedly varietal, has some compexity added from wild ferment and lees ageing and is dreadfully easy to drink. I believe lively, zingy grigio is more likely to find favour with mainstream drinkers than the more textural - and demanding gris - and it is wines like this, with 13% alcohol and tropical fruit and shortbread biscuit characters on the palate, that can lead the way.Winsor Dobbin, www.winsorschoice.blogspot.com (12/FEB/2011)

There are several excellent wines in the Yalumba Y range - the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Riesling are also outstanding. This is a perfect everyday quaffing wine; affordable, clean, well made and from Australia's oldest family winery. Juicy fruit characters lead the way with stone fruit and ripe citrus characters and a soft finish with pleasing acid. This is a ridiculously good wine for the price."Winsor Dobbin, Ciao (APR/2011)

Another ridiculously good cheap wine from Australia's oldest family owned winery. Yalumba's Y Series offeres great value for money right now and you'll struggle to find a better wine in the sub-$15 category. This is a bright and lively white for everyday drinking with fresh fruit salad aromas, apple and stone fruit flavours on the palate with some cereal notes from barrel fermentation adding texture. The wine is quite ripe and spicy (maybe more Gris that Grigio) but has a crisp and dry acid finish.Winsor Dobbin, Sunday Examiner (10/April/ 2011)

There's real complexity and interest here. Apricot kernel and hints of bran, stone fruits round out the edges, orange and lemon zest provide structure while mixed spice adds interest. The finish is refreshingly crisp and dry. Rating 90 - Tyson Stelzer, Wine 100 (March/April 2011)

Winemaking Note

Selective handpicking meant the grapes were picked at several passes through the vineyards to achieve optimal ripeness. The fruit was chilled overnight in small slotted bins and whole bunch pressing was used to minimise colour and tannin extraction from the pink skins, followed by oxidative handling to naturally remove any remaining colour. Fermentation proceeded on full solids, utilising yeasts indigenous to the vineyard. The wines were then left on their lees until blending in July, giving the final wine complexity and finesse.Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Wine Background

The Pinot Grigio depicts the vine tendril. The tendril is the vine’s hand. It allows the vine to climb and explore. Our vineyard people know that a well spread, airy canopy produces healthy, flavoursome grapes.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
