Expert Reviews

Wine of the Month - "Many people think organic winemaking is practical for only small-scale growers, but here Yalumba happily delves into the genre. And it is very successful, with its 2007 Organic Viognier judged the top white at the 2008 Organic Wine Show. The 2011 shows ripe apricot and almond aromas and a fresh, bright palate."

Peter Bourne, Sydney Morning Herald (30/MAR/2012)

"Supple and relatively light on its feet, but brimming with honeysuckle-immersed pear, lemon and passion fruit flavors. Finishes with finesse. Drink now."

Rating 90 - Harvey Steimann, Wine Spectator (April/2012)

"The 2011 Organic Viognier displays intense notes of ripe nectarines, warm pears and jasmine with a yeasty / earthy undercurrent. Medium bodied with an appealing suggestion of oiliness to the texture, it offers a good amount of stone fruit flavor in the mouth offset by lively acid, finishing long and yeasty / savory. Drinking nicely now, it should keep to 2014."

Rating 88 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, eRobertParker.com #199 , (FEB/2012)

"This comes from growers in the Riverland and has a rich nose of honeysuckle and bakers dough, yoghurt coated apricots and other scintillating florals. Nicely textured entry, lovely spread of citrus and tropical fruit that cascade cleanly to a tight acid finish. A textural wine that’s opulent and expressive without being cloying and fat. Good job."

Winery Tasting Notes

Straw in colour with green hues.

The aroma of the Yalumba Organic Viognier 2011 shows a varietal and alluring earthy nose upfront before settling into the pretty aromas of white flowers, jasmine and honeysuckle with hints of fennel.

The palate is a beautiful layering of distinct flavours starting with fresh apricot nectar, leading into a creamy mid palate with bright citrus and Asian five spice on the finish.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
