Overview

The Yalumba Merlot made by Yalumba's Red Winemaker Kevin Glastonbury shows classic Merlot varietal character-soft and supple with delightful aromas of sweet berry fruits, rose petals and spice. Ripe sweet plums on the palate together with gentle tannins leads to a lovely soft finish.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Intense crimson red.

Aroma

The wine displays aromas of beetroot and red fruits with hints of eucalypt, crushed fennel and tobacco leaf.

Palate

The palate is youthful and bright with red currants and mulberries, juicy fruit through the mid palate, velvety tannins and rhubarb tartness on the finish.

Winemaking Note

Fermentation of the merlot grapes was carried out in static potter and rotary fermenters. Warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation and a three to five day post ferment maceration period helped with the extraction of soft fleshy tannins to build wine structure.

Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Wine Background

This Merlot depicts the winery dog. It could be a Flash, a Nugget or an Archie type dog. With its wet nose, soft fur and sparkling, clear eyes, the dog is a reminder of loyal and long term relationships, a hallmark of the Yalumba culture.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
