Expert Reviews

The bouquet is full of mocha oak, sarsaparilla and plums; the palate is fleshy, forward, rich and fresh,

showing the McLaren Vale side of this variety's personality; generous, but not to a fault, just a lovely drink

Rating 92 - Drink by 2015 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2013

“There’s something inherently rustic and winey about this Tempranillo from McLaren Vale. It’s bright and fruity and clean, with flavours of black and sour cherry and oodles of warm spice. It’s intensely licoricey as you swallow, and while there are notes of dried herbs there’s nothing bitter or even overtly savoury about it. The thing is, it’s not sweet or overly simple either. There’s no sign of oak – it just has a natural, variety-driven complexity about it. I didn’t swoon but I did enjoy drinking it..”

The Wine Front – Campbell Mattison

“From McLaren Vale, this is a most delightful temp and sits in the top echelon of those made here, so far. Lovely black cherry notes and hints of roast meats. Fine silky tannins. Good intensity and bold flavours. A supple style with lots of length.”

Winemaking Note

The Tempranillo was harvested in March, destemed, crushed and fermented in an open fermenter. Warm fermentation temperatures combined with regular pumpovers to start with and then plunging as fermentation slowed ensures a balance of tannin extraction whilst still maintaining the desired delicate lifted aromatics and depth of fruit. The wine is then matured in older French oak to add balance and complexity, but not override the fruit.

5 Star Winery - James Halliday's Wine Companion 2013

Willunga 100 is based in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia, about 40 minutes south of Adelaide. Founded in 2005, the company is a joint venture between quality UK based importer, Liberty Wines, owned and operated by David Gleave MW, and industry veteran John Ratcliffe. A 4.5 Star rated winery by James Halliday, he believes Willunga 100"has hit the scene running, with outstanding value for money."

The wines up until 2009 were made by one of Australia’s most dynamic and awarded winemakers Steve Pannell, assisted by Kate Day. Kate working previously at Mitchelton Wines, Mount Adam and Wellington Wines Tasmania. They are still made by Kate and we are lucky enough to have the experience and expertise of Tim James who has joined us. He is well known on the wine-judging circuit, and was the Managing Director of Wirra Wirra Wine Company for seven years until 2007, and before that was Production Director at Hardy's.

We source our fruit from an array of vineyards, some of which are up to 50 years old, reflecting the character of the area and the varieties from which they are made.

It has been a tradition to hang an Olive Branch above your door to announce the release of a great vintage wine. This blend is appropriately named after this great tradition.
