Expert Reviews

Bright deep crimson; dark and exotic on the bouquet, with liqueur soaked plums, clove and sage; the palate is warm and inviting, direct and expansive, showing the true class of Grenache in McLaren Vale; moreover, the quality of the vintage shines through.

Rating 95 - Drink by 2016 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2013

`Top Aussie Red` - Excellent deep colour introduces a rich and complex wine with mixed spice and dark fruit aromas and a savoury whiff from barrel ageing. Rich, full bodied and smooth, it has density and concentration, balance and length. A serious Grenache. Now until 2020. Food Match – steak & kidney pie.

Rating 92 - Huon Hooke Good Living Wine, Sydney Morning Herald (22/11/2011)

Top 100 New Release Wines, Gourmet Traveller Wine (Feb/March 2012)

“A fresh-faced Grenache if ever there was one. You could call it ‘epitome of Grenache’. It has sweet raspberry-like notes but booster flavours of blueberry and black cherry too. There are spicy/chalky edges and maybe a light sheen of cedary oak – but fruit definitely does the talking. Touch of alcohol warmth, more or less as a positive. Tasty wine all over. Winery Tasting Notes

This lively wine displays intense aromatics of cherry, raspberry, spice and hints of dried herbs.

Winemaking Note

Open fermenters are used in conjunction with hot ferment temperatures and regular pump-overs and plunging to ensure optimum extraction at the beginning of ferment; this regime is lessened towards the end of ferment to maintain the delicate aromatics of the Grenache grape. Timely pressing, only using the best press fractions ensured good quality of flavour and the favourable drying, sandy tannin structure. The wine is matured in older French oak, to add complexity and mid palate richness, but not to dominate the varietal characters. The wine is bottled under screwcap to maintain freshness and ensure longevity.

Top Gold Medal Winner & one of 12 finalists in the Jimmy Watson tasting (Royal Wine Show 2011)

The Willunga 100 McLaren Vale Grenache 2010 is the sole Grenache to be awarded a Gold medal at the 2011 Royal Melbourne Wine Show and is the highest scoring wine of the 54 entries in the Rhône Styles category of Shiraz and/or Grenache based blends. 5 Star Winery - James Halliday's Wine Companion 2013

Willunga 100 is based in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia, about 40 minutes south of Adelaide. Founded in 2005, the company is a joint venture between quality UK based importer, Liberty Wines, owned and operated by David Gleave MW, and industry veteran John Ratcliffe. A 4.5 Star rated winery by James Halliday, he believes Willunga 100"has hit the scene running, with outstanding value for money."

The wines up until 2009 were made by one of Australia’s most dynamic and awarded winemakers Steve Pannell, assisted by Kate Day. Kate working previously at Mitchelton Wines, Mount Adam and Wellington Wines Tasmania. They are still made by Kate and we are lucky enough to have the experience and expertise of Tim James who has joined us. He is well known on the wine-judging circuit, and was the Managing Director of Wirra Wirra Wine Company for seven years until 2007, and before that was Production Director at Hardy's.

We source our fruit from an array of vineyards, some of which are up to 50 years old, reflecting the character of the area and the varieties from which they are made.

It has been a tradition to hang an Olive Branch above your door to announce the release of a great vintage wine. This blend is appropriately named after this great tradition.
