Grenache is Willunga 100's flagship grape. It works so well in McLaren Vale. We source our fruit from 50 year old vines, located on sandy soils which give the wine a great depth of flavour and a supple yet grainy tannin structure.

Expert Reviews

Bright deep crimson; dark and exotic on the bouquet, with liqueur soaked plums, clove and sage; the palate is warm and inviting, direct and expansive, showing the true class of grenache in McLaren Vale; moreover, the quality of the vintage shines through. Top gold Melbourne Wine Show '11.

Rating 95 - Ben Edwards - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (DEC/2011)

“This delicious, big, punchy, fruit-laden grenache would make an excellent match for venison, either roasted or in a pie. Sweet raspberries on the nose, and ripe full-bodied sweet strawberries and spice on the palate.”

Irish Times, Bottles of the Week, 13th October 2012

Willunga 100 is one of the most impressive newer ventures in McLaren Vale, established by a group including David Gleave MW of Liberty Wines, one of Britain’s most important fine wine distributors. With a lifetime’s experience at Hardy’s, Tim James is the consultant to winemaker Kate Day.

Grenache,Shiraz and Viognier are all Mediterranean grapes that need plenty of sun and heat, which McLaren Vale can easily provide, and the 2010 vintage resulted in more elegant wines than is perhaps usual for the area.

The Grenache impresses me especially; while McLaren Vale routinely excels with this grape, this is a cut above. There should be more Grenaches of its quality – but then seasons like 2010 don’t come along every year. One of the most impressive new ventures in McLaren Vale, Sydney Morning Herald, Good Living Guide, Huon Hooke, 7th August 2012

Winery Tasting Notes

This wine is lively and intense, displaying aromatics of strawberry, rhubarb, cherries and hints of vanilla bean and dried herbs.

The palate demonstrates all the characters expected from a medium bodied Grenache: sandy, gritty tannin structure, lovely dryness on the finish coupled with balanced sweet strawberry compote fruit.

5 Star Winery - James Halliday's Wine Companion 2013

Willunga 100 is based in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia, about 40 minutes south of Adelaide. Founded in 2005, the company is a joint venture between quality UK based importer, Liberty Wines, owned and operated by David Gleave MW, and industry veteran John Ratcliffe. A 4.5 Star rated winery by James Halliday, he believes Willunga 100"has hit the scene running, with outstanding value for money."

The wines up until 2009 were made by one of Australia’s most dynamic and awarded winemakers Steve Pannell, assisted by Kate Day. Kate working previously at Mitchelton Wines, Mount Adam and Wellington Wines Tasmania. They are still made by Kate and we are lucky enough to have the experience and expertise of Tim James who has joined us. He is well known on the wine-judging circuit, and was the Managing Director of Wirra Wirra Wine Company for seven years until 2007, and before that was Production Director at Hardy's.

We source our fruit from an array of vineyards, some of which are up to 50 years old, reflecting the character of the area and the varieties from which they are made.

It has been a tradition to hang an Olive Branch above your door to announce the release of a great vintage wine. This blend is appropriately named after this great tradition.
