Expert Reviews

A highly expressive wine from the opening bell, cassis and red fruits jumping all over the place on the bouquet and palate, the latter particularly long and light on its feet, waving the juicy fruit on to the finish without any tannin or oak impediment to blur the message. Great value. James Halliday, Rating 92, 27th July 2015

Winery Tasting Notes

Very, very deep crimson with a dark red hue.

Rich fresh dark berry fruits; intense boysenberry and blackberry fruit characters.

A well flavoured wine showing those rich dark berry fruit flavours, beautifully balanced with the dusty oak characters picked up during barrel maturation. Great length of flavour.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.

West Cape Howe's driving philosophy is to make delicious wines of harmony, balance, structure and flavour - wines that people love to drink.
