Wolf Blass `Grey Label` Shiraz is the perfect illustration of why McLaren Vale is so highly regarded for its exceptional Shiraz. Wines from the region are full, rich and highly expressive of the variety with plush, vibrant fruit and fine, structural tannins. McLaren Vale lies close to the coast and this proximity, combined with its undulating topography provides a multitude of sub-regional terroirs, the amalgamation of which contributes to the depth and complexity of the final wine. The climate is Mediterranean with warm sunny days to perfectly ripen the berries and concentrate flavours, and fresh sea breezes to temper the heat. Meanwhile, the nearby Mount Lofty ranges channel cool winds down from the hills in the evenings, chilling the grapes and helping retain good crisp acidity and fine, graceful structure. The result: a classic example of power and elegance.

Expert Reviews

Excellent crimson-purple; if ever proof was needed that the best vineyards in McLaren Vale fared remarkably well in '11, this wine provides it. The flavours are precise, reflecting perfectly ripened fruit, with some dark chocolate along with the generous French and American oak (what else?); the tannins have their usual glossy polish.

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep crimson with purple hues.

A complex layered nose of mulberry, boysenberry and blackberry fruits with notes of liquorice, dark chocolate, warm spices and subtle fragrant oak.

Vibrant berry and fleshy blood-plum fruits meld with spice and dark chocolate. A plush, rich palate of great intensity and concentration is enlivened and lengthened by fine acidity and a velvety tannin structure, resulting in a wine of great power and elegance.

Will develop with age, softening and mellowing to reward a decade or more of careful cellaring.

Award Winning Winery

Wolf Blass Wines has grown from a humble tin shed to become one of the world's most successful and awarded wineries.

Wolf Blass was created in 1973 when Wolf started his own business, purchasing a 2.5 acre land holding with an old army shed outside Nuriootpa, at the northern end of the Barossa Valley.

In researching the name Bilyara, Wolf learned it was the Aboriginal name for "Eaglehawk" and given the eagle was also the national emblem of Germany, he decided his wines would carry the Eagle - a legacy that continues today and into the future.

Wolf Blass Wines won three consecutive Jimmy Watson Trophies with Black Label, generating substantial publicity and hype. In 1999, Wolf Blass Black Label made history, becoming the only wine to win the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy an unprecedented four times.

From this time onwards, growth has been impressive and inspiring with Wolf Blass winning a grand total of more than 3,000 awards at national and international wine shows, including most recently, International Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 International Wine Challenge in London.

Wolf Blass Wines have a tradition of quality, character and consistency from the refined and elite Platinum Label, and the majestic and complex Black Label through to delicate Rieslings and crisp Chardonnays.

Wolf Blass winemakers are an award winning winemaking team, continuously striving for the ultimate in excellence, character and integrity. The Wolf Blass wine style has always been a unique and highly distinguishable one. Our winemaking teams strong focus on careful fruit sourcing, fermentation, maturation and blending results in lifted vibrant fruit flavours, a soft, rounded palate and well integrated tannins that are the hallmarks of the total Wolf Blass range.

Chief Winemaker Chris Hatcher is widely considered to be one of Australia's leading winemakers and respected wine show judges. A wonderful ambassador for the wines of Wolf Blass and Australia, Chris Hatcher's legacy to Australian winemaking is already monumental.

"The sum of all parts should still be a better result than the quality of each individual part, otherwise why blend at all" - Chris Hatcher Chief Winemaker.
