Expert Reviews

Don Lewis was the winemaker at the Mitchelton winery for more than 34 years. He always loved Spain and, in 2004, found himself in the Priorat region with Narelle King a chartered accountant who had discovered the world of wine. They got along famously, joining forces to create the Tar & Roses label. Their 2009 Shiraz is pleasingly aromatic, it's ripe raspberry and cherry flavours supported by star anise, fennel seed and licorice. The deep savoury palate comfortably carries the firm backbone of tannins. Peter Bourne, Gourmet Traveller Wine (SEP/2011)

Medium red-purple; it is possible to have an elegant, medium-bodied, fragrant wine from Heathcote with midrange alcohol; the wine has fresh red cherry and plum fruit on the bouquet and palate, some spicy nuances and fine tannins. Waiting for you to open it whenever the mood takes you. Drink to 2019: Rating 93 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2012

Winemaking Note

The larger volume of shiraz comes from the Cambrian soil of Heathcote, while the other smaller parcels of Shiraz come from the more temperate Nagambie Lakes region. The first rounder, fuller, fruit driven wine, while the latter is more restrained and elegant. The addition of a small component of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Strathbogie Ranges tempers the intensity of the combined Shiraz characters, while a small proportion of Tempranillo adds complexity, balance and structure.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The extensive experience and winemaking knowledge of Don Lewis combined with Narelle King's broad thinking and diverse skill set, brought partnership strength to Tar & Roses. For the past three years, Don and Narelle have been making wine in Priorat, Spain, fuelling their intrigue in the classic European varietals, particularly Nebbiolo.

Their interests were not confined to the varietals or wine styles solely in traditional European regions, but how these varieties could be grown and made in Australia.

Back in Australia, Don and Narelle have concentrated on producing wines from these European varietals in their own region - Central Victoria. Here, they make Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese in addition to a Central Victorian Shiraz, one of Don's signature varieties.

Tar & Roses encapsulates the complexity and interest of this story. One that shows the friendship between Don and Narelle, and the multi-regions of Italy, Spain and Australia. It is a brand that speaks of the traditions of wine merging with the cutting edge of Australian winemaking, bridging the old world with the new.
