Sangiovese is a thin skinned variety like Nebbiolo. Known for its earthy more than fruit notes, it has attractive mid red colour and can be characterised by high levels of tannin well balanced by acid. It is suited to well drained soils with abundant sunlight both of which the Heathcote vineyard provides.

Expert Reviews

93 Points The aromas suggest dried herbs, dried cherry and fresh earth with floral high notes. It’s intense and bright in the mouth, with lively acidity. A classy wine.

Huon Hooke - The Age, 27 June 2017

92 Points Medium weight. Red cherry-currants and spice. Touch of sarsaparilla. Leather and rose water. Restrained in fruit character, good savoury edge, flat sheets of chalky tannin. Good length. This is doing a lot of things really well, including being super drinkable. Structure, restraint, good vibes. Like. A good release and firm recommendation.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The extensive experience and winemaking knowledge of Don Lewis combined with Narelle King's broad thinking and diverse skill set, brought partnership strength to Tar & Roses. For the past three years, Don and Narelle have been making wine in Priorat, Spain, fuelling their intrigue in the classic European varietals, particularly Nebbiolo.

Their interests were not confined to the varietals or wine styles solely in traditional European regions, but how these varieties could be grown and made in Australia.

Back in Australia, Don and Narelle have concentrated on producing wines from these European varietals in their own region - Central Victoria. Here, they make Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese in addition to a Central Victorian Shiraz, one of Don's signature varieties.

Tar & Roses encapsulates the complexity and interest of this story. One that shows the friendship between Don and Narelle, and the multi-regions of Italy, Spain and Australia. It is a brand that speaks of the traditions of wine merging with the cutting edge of Australian winemaking, bridging the old world with the new.
