Expert Reviews

Pinot grigio (grey) lives up to its name here, giving this "white" wine a pale grey-pink tint. It's sourced from the Nagambie Lakes (74 per cent) and Strathbogie Ranges (26 per cent) and matured on yeast lees in older oak barrels for one month. This treatment accentuates the wine's rich, smooth texture, an important element in wines made from this variety. It's a little more perfumed than most pinot grigios, revealing a touch of pear-like character and even a hint of strawberry. The palate's rich, soft and delicious another very good wine from winemakers Don Lewis and Narelle King Chris Shanahan, Canberra Times (4/SEP/2011)

Pinot Grigio ($19), from Central Victoria, is a pale pinky bronze and takes you well and truly into rosé territory, with alluring fragrance and crunchy strawberry pith characters. Tony Love, Adelaide Advertiser (21/SEP/2011)

Winemaking Note

Grapes for Tar & Roses Pinot Grigio were sourced from three vineyards; Mount Helen, Tarup Ridge and Stratford Vineyard. The higher altitude (400m) of the first two vineyards provides cooler conditions, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly, ideal for the development of the delicous classic fresh pear like flavour. The warmer region of the Stratford vineyard brings out the more tropical aromas of the flavour spectrum..

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The extensive experience and winemaking knowledge of Don Lewis combined with Narelle King's broad thinking and diverse skill set, brought partnership strength to Tar & Roses. For the past three years, Don and Narelle have been making wine in Priorat, Spain, fuelling their intrigue in the classic European varietals, particularly Nebbiolo.

Their interests were not confined to the varietals or wine styles solely in traditional European regions, but how these varieties could be grown and made in Australia.

Back in Australia, Don and Narelle have concentrated on producing wines from these European varietals in their own region - Central Victoria. Here, they make Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese in addition to a Central Victorian Shiraz, one of Don's signature varieties.

Tar & Roses encapsulates the complexity and interest of this story. One that shows the friendship between Don and Narelle, and the multi-regions of Italy, Spain and Australia. It is a brand that speaks of the traditions of wine merging with the cutting edge of Australian winemaking, bridging the old world with the new.
