Trifon Estate Wines

Our Trifon Estate award winning wines are vintaged from high quality grapes grown from the family estate vineyard in Central Victoria. The area enjoys a moderate cool climate, with ideal soils and has been producing quality wines since 1860.

Saint Trifon is venerated in the Christian churches where he is known as the patron saint of winegrowers and winemakers. Born of pious Christian parents in the third century, Trifon earned his reputation as a world-class miracle healer at the young age of 17 by curing Roman Emperor Gordian´s daughter of a serious disease. When Christian-persecuting Decius succeeded Gordian, Trifon was immediately arrested, tortured, and decapitated His feast day is celebrated on February 1st and also on February 14th by those who are dedicated adherents.

OUR REGION Central Victoria Victoria is tucked into the south-eastern corner of the Australian mainland and is home to many diverse regions. Under Australia’s system of Geographic Indications (GI) the country’s wine growing regions are divided into a set of Zones, Regions and Sub-Regions. The Trifon Estate is located within the Goulburn Valley region within the Central Victorian zone. The potential for the Goulburn Valley, as a wine region, was first identified by a government land survey undertaken in 1850’s. The survey revealed the region as possessing an abundance of water, an ideal moderately cool climate, and alluvial loam soils sitting over a base of clay. The first vines were planted in 1860 and the region has continuously produced premium wine ever since.

Our Vineyard A lengthy search to find the right piece of land from which to bring the family’s dreams and vision to life culminated in 1998. A 770 acre block in Wahring in Central Victoria, about 145 kilometers north of Melbourne, was identified. Not only was the property extremely attractive with wide plains, pockets of native bush and 4km of frontage onto the majestic Goulburn River, a comprehensive soil survey indicated that the sight was exceptionally well suited to viticulture. In 1999 planting commenced on what was initially known as the Stratford Vineyard. Over the next three years 600 acres were planted creating one of the largest single site vineyards for the production of premium wine in Australia. All vines are European clones grafted on to the highest quality phylloxera resistant rootstock. There are 15 varieties on the vineyard with the most significant plantings being shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay and pinot gris.

OUR TERROIR Existing on an ancient river bed and flood plain the predominant soil type in the vineyard is alluvial loam sitting atop a clay sub soil. In the higher parts of the vineyard we find small peaks dense in limestone. The region experiences a Mediterranean type climate with cool, wet winters and mild dry summers. The warmest mean temperatures occur in January and the coolest in July.

Trifon Estate is privileged to have an outstanding vineyard and experienced and dedicated family members and loyal staff who take exceptional care to maintain it at optimum condition. This has resulted in the production of consistently high quality fruit and wines beginning with the first vintage in 2001 and carrying through until the latest vintage in 2013. Evidence of the high quality wine created by Trifon Estate is the 53 awards, including trophies as well as gold, silver and bronze medals, we have received in the past 13 months at various leading Australian wine shows such as the Royal Melbourne Wine Show, Royal Adelaide Wine Show and the Australian Shiraz Challenge.
