Overview

Separate parcels of fully ripened syrah grapes were hand-harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Bullnose Vineyard between 19 and 22 April, 2011

The individual lots were handled in a traditional manner; destemming, a warm, plunged fermentation, extended skin maceration, pressing, and then a secondary malolactic fermentation. The separate wines were then run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for 15 months’ maturation, before blending, egg-white fining and then bottling in July 2012.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.

Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
