This Syrah has a touch of white viognier, a traditional winemaking technique in France’s Rhône Valley. It introduces a delightful floral aroma and supple texture to syrah’s spicy dark-berry flavours.

The wine displays aromas of red cherries, raspberries and the pepper and jasmine floral notes.

The palate features the same red berry fruits completed by baking spice flavours and integrated soft tannins.

This wine will continue to develop in bottle for 2-5 years from harvest.

Food Matching

Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Syrah ‘10 is a wonderful accompaniment to all red meats, savoury and lightly spiced dishes of Mediterranean cuisine, as well as soft ripened cheeses.

Winemaking Note

Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Syrah 2010 was hand harvested from our Woodthorpe vineyard between 15 April and 5 May 2010. Fully-ripened syrah was combined with 4% viognier grapes, then destemmed and co-fermented.

The resulting wine remained on skins for extended maceration before pressing. It was then run off to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for 12 months’ maturation, during which time it was regularly topped and racked. The wine received a traditional egg-white fining before being bottled in March 2011.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.

Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
