Expert Reviews

Te Mata Estate’s Woodthorpe Vineyard offers five single vineyard wines of eye-catching quality and value. Woodthorpe Merlot/Cabernets always reminds me of a good Bordeaux, with very satisfying depth of fresh berryish fruit flavours, some savoury, spicy complexity - and great drinkability..Michael Cooper, 100 must-try New Zealand Wines (JUL/2011)

“...fragrant, lifted and ripe, red berry fruit and floral aromatics... densely concentrated, ripe dark fruit flavours… Rating 18/20 - Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Merlot/Cabernets ‘09 has a dark ruby colour.

Aroma

The wine shows aromas of ripe blackberry, blueberry, cedar and spiced fruitcake.

Palate

The palate is rounded and generous, with lovely fruit richness supported by ripe powdery tannins, giving structure and length to the long finish.

Grape Varietals

Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Merlot/Cabernets ‘09 is a blend of 46% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot.

Food Matching

It is a wonderful accompaniment to savoury red meats dishes and hard white cheeses.

Cellaring Potential

It will continue to evolve in bottle for 3-6 years from harvest.

Winemaking Note

The individual parcels of each variety, from each plot, were destemmed and given a warm, plunged fermentation with extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were run off to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for 19 months’ maturation. The barrels were regularly topped and racked before blending and egg white fining prior to bottling.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.

Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
