Expert Reviews

Cherry and raspberry, spicy and floral, white pepper and some smokiness. Light to medium bodied, juicy raspberry, spicy, crunchy and great to drink, with a light dusting of raspy tannin, and sweet fruited and peppery finish. So nice to drink. Spot on. Rating 91 - Drink by 2019, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (MAR/2016).

Winery Tasting Notes

A vibrant crimson with a bright purple edge.

Beguiling fragrance of rose petals and crushed ripe raspberries, with a floral citrus blossom twist.

The palate is refreshing, soft and rich, with an immediate delicacy. Plum, black cherry and notes of cocoa and French vanilla add to the wine’s charm and luxurious, velvet feel. All the fruits and flowers of a great New Zealand summer! A jewel.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.

Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
