Widely regarded as NZ’s greatest red wine. Exceptionally long lived it shows concentrated dark berry characters, a firm, finely textured palate with a sustained finish. A powerful full-bodied wine that rewards cellaring, Coleraine will evolve over 10-15 years.
"Hawkes Bay’s best blended red"
It takes a little nerve to declare a wine as the best of its type or even the best ever vintage of a certain label. But I’m on reasonably solid ground when I describe Te Mata Coleraine as Hawkes Bay’s best blended red. Coleraine has been impressing wine lovers since its first vintage in 1982.
Dense, powerful red with classic cabernet sauvignon characters including cassis, floral and sweet mint flavours. Lovely juicy fruit gives accessibility. Should age magnificently. I rate it best ever. Bob Campbell MW, Kia Ora Magazine (MAY/2011)
A dense, powerful red with classic cabernet sauvignon characters. Lovely juicy fruit... it will age magnificently. Coleraine doesn’t get much better than this. “This wine should put a gleam in the eye of collectors”Bob Campbell MW, Gourmet Traveller Wine (JUN/JUL 2011)

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.
Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.
Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.
Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
