Te Mata Estate’s Woodthorpe vineyard is a large single vineyard on elevated river terraces, angled to the sun. This traditional blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc is a complex and rewarding wine showing ripe blackcurrant, plum and chocolate flavours with a supple and sustained palate.
This bargain-priced red is Te Mata’s biggest seller – and deservedly so. The 2008 vintage estate-grown in Hawke’s Bay, is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, matured for 17 months in French oak casks (new and seasoned). Full-coloured, with a fragrant, slightly spicy bouquet, it is fresh and vibrant, with generous blackcurrant and spice flavours, slightly herbal and nutty. It’s finely balanced for early drinking or moderate cellaring.Rating 4 Stars -Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines 2011
Has an attractive cedar nose with dark berry fruits, savory, gamey with good definition. The palate broadens out to some lush, black cherry, bilberry and allspice notes.Rating 90 -92 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate #191 (OCT/2010)

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.
Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.
Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.
Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
