Expert Reviews

Te Mata’s Elston chardonnay has been produced since 1984. I’ve never had an old one, but I sure like this 2009. It’s beautiful - and impressive. It tastes of green melon, flint, spicy oak and pineapple. It has terrific intensity and a scintillating sense of purity. It has some milky, powdery, chalky aspects too and the instant it hits your tongue you think - here’s a live one. The aftertaste is like chewing on fresh bran/oatmeal. It’s a stunning wine. Winery Tasting Notes

Light golden colour

Elston 2009 is a rich, complex wine, balanced with fresh acidity, leading to a long finish.

Food Matching

Matches well with full flavoured dishes based on seafood, poultry and white meats as well as soft ripened cheeses.

Cellaring Potential

5 years from harvest.

Vintage Condition

A mild spring lead to an early budburst and condition continued warm to hot through to flowering in December and beyond, with some vineyards requiring irrigation. The decision not to leaf pluck on the white grapes proved to be wise as the heat continued all summer. Harvest began on February 22, with 60 mm of rain falling just a week later accompanied by cooler temperatures. No further rain fell during vintage, and the heavy fall in late February steadied the ripening.

Brand Profile Image

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.

Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
