Under the direction of Chief Winemaker, John Kavanagh, our winemaking philosophy places a premium on the character of the site. Our 2013 Chardonnay comprises handpicked fruit from the Home Vineyard, predominantly of clones 95 and Mendoza, with each block and clone vinified seperately. Gently whole-bunch pressed, the resulting juice is barrel fermented and aged for 10 months in French oak, (20% in new Fench oak puncheons, 500ltr) to add structure, and balanced integration of oak character. The wine goes through malolactic fermentation, providing a subtle creaminess and texture whilst maintaining elegance with a wonderful acidity.

Winery Profile

"tee-kigh-runga" - where the soil is rich and the food is plentiful, Te Kairanga is one of Martinborough's founding vineyards established over 20 years ago. In keeping with the pioneering spirit surrounding the vineyard, a number of Te Kairanga wines have hailed from Martinborough's history and that of its inhabitants dating back to 1879. Our own John Martin Reserve Pinot Noir, known and loved by many, is notably named after the foundingfather of Martinborough - John Martin himself. Likewise the Pinot Runholder is aptly named as a tribute to the runholders of the land back in time.

Distinctively boutique, Te Kairanga was established over 25 years ago and is one of Martinborough’s founding wineries. We have six vineyards here, each with its own distinctive characteristics and suited to different varieties and viticultural practises. Our focus is handcrafted, benchmark wines that showcase old world style with new world flair, and are true representations of the Martinborough growing region.
