Expert Reviews

A wine for the table, not the bar’, the 2009 vintage is an excellent example of the Hawke’s Bay regional style, ripely scented, weighty and fully dry. A finely structured wine (it includes 5 per cent Sémillon), likely to age gracefully, it has sweet-fruit delights, with concentrated melon/lime flavours, and a subtle seasoning of oak (15 per cent of the blend was barrel-fermented) adding complexity.Rating 4 Stars - Michael Cooper, Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide to New Zealand Wines 2011

An elegant expression of the variety displaying gentle aromas of feijoa, lemon zest and chalk/mineral. The palate is finely textured and tightly structured with excellent acidity and a juicy mid palate. The wine is not overtly aromatic but the palate delivers beautifully with good fruit intensity and well harmonised mouthfeel. At its best: now to 2014.Rating 86 - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (JAN/2011)

The approach on the palate is low key. Weight builds across the palate to the point where you know something serious is happening. There is no real impression of acidity, yet it is definitely there. More so the tannin structure gives the palate form and texture, whilst the ripe fruit provides weight. Balance is achieved through the use of different winemaking techniques, fermentation vessels and fermentation temperatures. Once again the mineral notes typical of the site are apparent; illustrated in this case as a statue like austerity, or perhaps a slight chalky texture on the back palate.
