The Te Awa Syrah is sourced from the oldest Syrah vines on the estate, Zone4. This parcel of vines is referred to as `Mass Select`, meaning it was selected from vines of superior performance over many generations. No GM here. Zone 4 is on extremely free draining gravels.

Winery Tasting Notes

A very typical Syrah nose of black berry fruits and cinnamon quill spice. Savoury notes such as miso, beef stock and freshly filed steel give this wine an extra dimension. This umami like complexity is the result of multiple strains of vineyard yeast and long term barrel aging on a heavy lee of decaying skin fragment, yeast and malo lactic bacteria.

The palate is medium bodied as one would expect from our version of Syrah. The tannins are supple and remain unmodified, in their naturally extracted state, poised to take the wine forward in the bottle. Expect a richness of flavour, an economy of flamboyance and the satisfaction of natural balance.

Brand Profile Image

As a single estate winery, Te Awa cherish their rich diversity that the unique terroir of Te Awa provides. Their philosophy is to achieve balanced wines, reflecting the grapes from which they are made and having the individuality of our vineyard site. Embracing the time proven traditions of the worlds great winemakers, they harvest and vinify the different parcels of our vineyard separately, which gives us small variations in flavour and texture and thus more options when it comes to blending.

Their aim is for a synergistic effect, where the wine will be better than the sum of the individual parts. Once blended, the components marry and age together, evolving towards harmony as one wine - the best possible expression of their vineyards unique character.
