Expert Reviews

A perennially reliable, moderately priced, quality Barossa Shiraz. This follows a satisfying theme: dark berries, plums, chocolate, a dab of vanillin oak, juicy balance, medium body, smooth texture and depth in the mouth. A savoury backbone of finely textured sandy tannins completes the picture.4 Stars - The Age, Epicure (JUN/2012)

Strong crimson-purple; the sheer consistency of the Thorn-Clarke wines is remarkable; this medium bodied wine brings together gently ripe blackberry and plum fruit; fine-grained tannins and a wisp of oak. Great over the next five years.Rating 90 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2012

Sandpiper from Thorn-Clarke is a consistent winner in our tastings. Aroma reminiscent of blackberries, vanilla cream, mild spice and mocha lead through a ripe, medium-bodied palate of agreeable softness. Hearty, meaty pasta dishes work well with this satisfying, mellow drop.

4 Stars - Cusine (JUN/2012)

Deep red/purple wine with fruity blackberry nose and a minty, perfumed lift. Medium-bodied palate with intense and complex tarry/licorice flavours. Needs time for fruit to develop.4.5 Star - WINESTATE ANNUAL SHIRAZ TASTING, SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2011

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The colour is a deep inky purple.

Aroma

The nose is a complex mixture of ripe blackberry and plum fruit with a dash of creamy vanillin oak.

Palate

The palate is medium to full bodied which starts with some sweet plummy fruit, the flavour then builds in the palate to provide an explosion of raspberry flavours. There is some lovely mouth coating tannins which combine with dark chocolate oak and fruit to provide a great depth and length of flavour.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

After 20 years in vineyard development, Thorn-Clarke is without doubt one of the most exciting Barossa Valley brands to enter the market in some time. The name Thorn-Clarke derives literally from the relationship between two long time Barossa Families. Founders David and Cheryl Clarke (Nee Thorn) work with their son and daughter, Sam and Nicole, in this family-orientated business. With four family-owned vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valley, Thorn-Clarke produces wines across three ranges (Sandpiper, Shotfire and William Randell). All represent exceptional value and display true regional character. This label showcases the best that the Barossa has to offer.
