The Sandpiper range is named after the migratory bird which visits the Thorn-Clarke vineyards annually from the northern hemisphere - something of a reminder of the tenacity and commitment which is required for long term viticulture.

Expert Reviews

This is quintessential 2012 Eden Valley Riesling, capturing the flattering personality of a grand season in a value-for-money package. A bouquet of lime blossom perfume and kaffir lime spice is reminiscent of many of the more expensive Rieslings of the vintage. The palate follows a similar form, with crunchy granny smith apple and tense lime zest fruit of impressive concentration and purity. Taut acidity lingers long on the finish, amidst subtle mineral texture.Rating 93 - Tyson Stelzer (SEP/2012)

This Barossa- and Eden Valley- based family winery produces a very consistent range of quality wines, of which the Sandpiper line represents excellent value – especially the Riesling. A little of 2002 tasted recently showed what fine wines they are and how well they hold with age. The colour is pale, the aromas are minerally and restrained, with slaty notes, building a hint of ginger and spice as it airs. It’s delicate and understated in the mouth, with chalky texture and a hint of lemon pith. Dry, mineral and borderline austere in its youth, it’s tightly wound and promises much for the future. You can enjoy it with simply cooked fish now, though. Drink now to 2020 and beyond.Rating 92 - Huon0 Hooke, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD (SEP2012)

From Mount Crawford at the southern end of South Australia's Eden Valley, Thorn-Clarke's Sandpiper wines are great value. This soon-to-be-released 2012 riesling has a musky, floral nose with suggestions of apple, lime and cinnamon. The palate is very dry and savoury with good length and a firm backbone.THE AGE, AUGUST 2012

Winery Tasting Notes

The nose is bright and lifted with lime juice, perfumed floral notes and honeysuckle characters.

The palate is crisp, clean with vibrant, zingy lemon zest flavours combined with a hint of lime leaf. There is a lovely crisp and clean mouthfeel, balanced with citrus fruits and natural acidity.

Brand Profile Image

After 20 years in vineyard development, Thorn-Clarke is without doubt one of the most exciting Barossa Valley brands to enter the market in some time. The name Thorn-Clarke derives literally from the relationship between two long time Barossa Families. Founders David and Cheryl Clarke (Nee Thorn) work with their son and daughter, Sam and Nicole, in this family-orientated business. With four family-owned vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valley, Thorn-Clarke produces wines across three ranges (Sandpiper, Shotfire and William Randell). All represent exceptional value and display true regional character. This label showcases the best that the Barossa has to offer.
