The Sandpiper range is named after the migratory bird which visits the Thorn-Clarke vineyards annually from the northern hemisphere - something of a reminder of the tenacity and commitment which is required for long term viticulture.

According to our winemakers Pinot gris is one of the most challenging white wines to make. The first choice they are faced with is when to pick and what style to make. There are of course two style of wine made from the same grape variety (Pinot gris and Pinot grigio). The styles can range from crisp, lean and racy to luscious, opulent and rich. The latter part of the spectrum is generally labeled as Pinot gris. The style relies on flavour richness and texture.

Winery Tasting Notes

The colour is mid straw.

The nose shows lifted fruits with notes of pear and blossom.

The palate is medium bodied with Nashi pears and apple puree. There is a lovely richness and viscosity which can be attributed to the time on yeast. The wine finishes clean and crisp with great length of fruit.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

After 20 years in vineyard development, Thorn-Clarke is without doubt one of the most exciting Barossa Valley brands to enter the market in some time. The name Thorn-Clarke derives literally from the relationship between two long time Barossa Families. Founders David and Cheryl Clarke (Nee Thorn) work with their son and daughter, Sam and Nicole, in this family-orientated business. With four family-owned vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valley, Thorn-Clarke produces wines across three ranges (Sandpiper, Shotfire and William Randell). All represent exceptional value and display true regional character. This label showcases the best that the Barossa has to offer.
