The fruitiest and the spiciest of the varietals – a unique wine. It is in Alsace that this grape variety reaches the height of perfection. Its dry personality makes it ideal as an aperitif and it pairs extremely well with specialty cuisine with pronounced flavors.

“The alcohol was so high on Gewurztraminer in 2009,” explains Pierre Trimbach, “that we picked our own vineyards early, at the beginning of October, so as to arrive at a good balance when combined with juice from purchased grapes,” and in the end, a “classic” 2009 Gewurztraminer – at 14.5% alcohol and for all that harboring 12 grams of residual sugar – incorporates the estate fruit that would usually inform reserve and Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre bottlings. Rose pepper, cinnamon, basil, and black pepper in the nose segue into a palate expansive and subtly creamy as well as pungent and piquant, saved from excess of bitterness or more than a small measure of heat by its supply of primary juiciness.
“The oenologists were saying in 2009 ‘Oh we have to get approval so that we can add acidity,’ but it was absolutely unnecessary, for us,” notes Pierre Trimbach, who indeed delivered a surprisingly animated collection, albeit one diminished in size by instances of declassification. The Trimbachs compare their 2008s with 1998, adding that there is something of 2001 to them, too. As a group, they are going to further the reputation of wines from this family for rewarding patience. David Schildknecht, eRobertParker.com (MAY/2011)
