Tahbilk 150th Anniversary Commemorative Release

One of three wines personally selected by my family to recognise and celebrate the achievement of 150 years of wine making at Tahbilk it is distinctively labelled to reflect that drawing on an original 1932 label of my father Eric. As with its companion 1999 '1927 Vines' Marsanne & 2000 '1933 Vines' Shiraz releases, this Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vines planted in 1949 expresses the quality, style & elegance that have cemented our reputation as a producer of premium single Estate wines.

Expert Reviews

"Classic cigar-box, medium-aged Cabernet nose with the accent on tobacco. Savoury and complex with drying tannins cleaning up the finish, following ample mid-palate fruit. Elegant and stylish. Drink Now to 2020"AUSTRALIAN GOURMET TRAVELLER WINE - TOP 100 NEW RELEASE WINES

Deep ruby red in colour.

The nose and palate show an intense mixture of cedar, tobacco and spice combined with anise undertones whilst finishing with fine grained tannins.

Wine Background

2010 sees Tahbilk celebrating their 150th anniversary. Established in 1860 and owned by the Purbrick family since 1925, Tahbilk remains one of Victoria's oldest family owned wineries. As recognition of five generations of Purbrick family involvement at Tahbilk and in preparation for this landmark year, Tahbilk chose the very best fruit from its 1927 Marsanne, 1933 Shiraz and 1949 Cabernet vines, made a small range of super premium wines that are perfect expressions of Tahbilk terroir and style. After a decade maturing in their historic cellars, the year of celebration is here and Tahbilk is proud to release its special release range of 150th Anniversary wines.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Established in 1860 Tahbilk is one of Australia's most beautiful & historic wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes region of central Victoria (120kms north of Melbourne), one of the nation's premium viticultural areas, the property comprises some 1,214 hectares of rich river flats with a frontage of 11 kms to the Goulburn River and 8 kms of permanent backwaters & creeks.

The vineyard comprises 200 hectares of vines including the French Rhone Valley whites of Marsanne, Viognier & Roussanne; the Rhone reds - Shiraz, Grenache & Mourvedre; along with traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc & Verdelho.

Vineyard plantings extend back to Tahbilk's founding with original pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines still surviving from 1860 - an eponymous wine produced from them since 1979.

Tahbilk is further blessed with an abundance of further "old vine" plantings including Shiraz from 1933 (the prime source for Tahbilk's 'Eric Stevens Purbrick' Shiraz releases), Cabernet Sauvignon back to 1949 and Marsanne from 1927 (a "sister" white release to the 1860 Vines Shiraz produced from them).

Harvest commences in early March and continues for five to six weeks with approximately 1,600 tonnes (red & white) grapes processed.Total production is over 100,000 cases with just over 20% being exported to the key markets of U.S.A., United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries.
