This wine is unlikely to be released as often as the Stella Bella Serie Luminosa Cabernet Sauvignon, as Merlot is a difficult variety to work with in terms of producing the level of quality that is demanded from the Serie Luminosa tier. It is sourced from the same vineyards as the Cabernet Sauvignon and is made in exactly the same way. There are only a handful of wine producing regions in Australia that produce outstanding Merlot and Margaret River is one of them. Merlot is susceptible to ‘coulure’ (failure of the vine flowers to develop usually due to poor spring weather) so site selection is critical.

Expert Reviews

Good colour; a seriously complex bouquet combines dark fruits, black olive and quality French oak and the medium- to full-bodied palate simply builds on those components; surely one of the best merlots on the market today. Rating 95 - Drink to 2020 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 19th May 2011

“Luminosa Light – the best and brightest merlot from the vintage, and then only made in exceptional ones. Aromas of perfumed gum-leaves, cocoa, tobacco, blackberried fruits and aniseed. A web of silky fine tannins. Both a savouriness and a gentleness, despite its firm structure. When describing this wine, you can’t help but use the word ‘sophisticated’. Plenty of charm and nothing overdone. Slight chinotto-like bitterness on the finish. Top wine. Ageworthy.” Rating 94 - Gary Walsh, Drink 2012 - 2020 The Big Red Wine Book 2011

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep crimson

Dark red fruits, plums, blackberries, mocha, cocoa, and a touch of aniseed. This is a very complex Merlot.

Classic Merlot generosity, but still structured and focused. There is abundant fruit flavour here, with high quality oak evident, yet the wine still retains its savoury edge; a clever balancing act. The abundant fruit flavours evolve into an impressive finish, showing fine grained tannins. This wine walks the line of having power and sophistication beautifully. Everything evolves into the next sensation gently and seamlessly. Great length and focus.

Now until 2020

Enjoy with dry aged beef, slow cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary and Pasta al Ragù.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The beginnings of Stella Bella Wines date back to the release of 200 cases of the single vineyard Suckfizzle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon in 1999 by winemakers Janice McDonald and Stuart Pym.

In 2000 the first Stella Bella wine, a Moscato style Pink Muscat was released followed by a Sangiovese Cabernet in 2003. An interest in Italian wine influencing both the choice of name and wine styles.

And the latest addition, Skuttlebutt an everyday drinking style, was released in 2003.

From this modest and eclectic beginning, Stella Bella Wines has experienced rapid growth, broad critical acclaim and a reputation for producing individually crafted Margaret River wines of great expression, personality and quality.

The grafting and crafting of this reputation has been and remains a very hands-on journey for Stella Bella Wines. Both owners and staff alike have worked intuitively and with a high level of self belief and trust in one another.

Our future success is inextricably linked to the Margaret River region and the crafting of the best wines possible from this precious and scarce vineyard resource.
