This Pinot Noir is hand-harvested from vines in the Marlborough vineyard, gently separated from the stems and fermented in small, traditional open-top vats. These vats are hand-plunged to extract colour and tannin, and after pressing the wine is aged in French oak barrels. Fruit-driven in style with soft tannins and spicy oak.

Expert Reviews

Flavoursome, scented Pinot Noir with a mix of dark and red fruits plus a suggestion of floral and spice flavours. Nicely balanced with fine tannins giving a pleasantly drying finish. Bob Campbell, Rating 92

Deepish red colour with a purple tint. Smoky, toasty, spicy oak-driven bouquet with ripe, rich fruit and ample body. The texture is soft and smooth and rounded, a very tasty and accessible Pinot which also has depth and aging potential. Rich, quite oak-marked style, but not out of balance. Very long and satisfying aftertaste. Huon Hooke, Rating 92

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep Purple/Garnet.

Fragrant dried spices, toasted nuts, cocoa and plum/boysenberry fruit aromas.

The low yielding harvest is apparent in the texture and palate density. Layers of red fruits and ground spices overlay a mouth filling and complete structure.

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
