An unassuming grape that has found a perfectly suited site on a sheltered part of Spy Valley's lower terrace 'C Block', tucked in a corner where successive flood events have deposited rich layers of mineral laden soils and overlaid them with gravels. This strata is sometimes stony on the surface but with veins of richness not far beneath. The vines enjoy balanced growth once established and consistently produce tight bunches with small berries. Fruit selection occurs in the vineyard from the best performing clonal selections during the season.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
