Overview

Wines in the single vineyard ENVOY range are selected from small micro-vineyard sites on our own estate blocks. ENVOY is the chosen representative at the highest level and presents accumulated knowledge and skill as interpreted by the winemakers. The wines are textural and complex, and honour the best winemaking tool of all - time.

An unassuming grape that has found a perfectly suited site on a sheltered part of our lower terrace 'C Block', tucked in a corner where successive flood events have deposited rich layers of mineral laden soils and overlaid them with gravels. This strata is sometimes stony on the surface but with veins of richness not far beneath. The vines enjoy balanced growth once established and consistently produce tight bunches with small berries. Fruit selection occurs in the vineyard from the best performing clonal selections during the season.

Expert Reviews

“Spy Valley’s flagship label is produced from grapes grown on rich, mineral-laden soils. Grapes are selected from the best clones grown in Spy Valley’s original vineyard. The fruit is hand-picked and fermented in oak barrels before being matured for seven months on lees prior to bottling. Luscious pinot gris that gives a nod in the direction of Alsace with appealing honeysuckle, orange blossom, pear, peach and star anise flavours. Moderately sweet but beautifully balanced. A great match for mildly spicy foods or to enjoy as an aperitif." Rating 96 - Gourmet Traveller Wine (DEC-JAN/2014)

Bright, even straw-yellow colour with light, green-gold hues. The bouquet is softly aromatic with a beautiful juxtaposition of delicate white and yellow stonefruits with honeysuckle, beside fresh mineral and steely notes, combining richness and freshness. Medium-sweet to taste and medium-full bodied, bright, lively fruit flavours of stonefruits meld with ripe pears and honey. The palate builds in richness and lusciousness, becoming softly rounded and unctuous. This has good power and drive, and the flavours flow smoothly along a creamy, integrated line, with restrained acidity providing sufficient energy and freshness. The palate leads to a soft-textured and plush finish with excellent presence. This is a lush, near unctuous, rich, medium-sweet Pinot Gris with ripe fruit and balancing freshness. Serve with mildly spicy Middle Eastern fare over the next 4+ years. Fruit from original plantings on the ‘C Block’ of Johnson Estate, hand-picked on first signs of raisining, and fermented in small oak foudres to 13.5% alc. and 29 g/L RS, the wine aged 6 months on lees. 4 1/2 Stars - Michael Coopers Buyers Guide 2014

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
