Overview

An unassuming grape that has found a perfectly suited site on a sheltered part of our lower terrace 'C Block', tucked in a corner where successive flood events have deposited rich layers of mineral laden soils and overlaid them with gravels. This strata is sometimes stony on the surface but with veins of richness not far beneath. The vines enjoy balanced growth once established and consistently produce tight bunches with small berries. Fruit selection occurs in the vineyard from the best performing clonal selections during the season.

Expert Reviews

"Medium style pinot gris in an Alsace-like vendange tardive style, with an appealing spicy finish that's rare to find in wines from this country. It's smooth-textured and very long, with a layer of exotic fruit flavours" 5 Stars / 93 Points - Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine

"Brilliant straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, pale on rim. Initially tight, the bouquet is intensely packed with aromas of yellow florals, pear, honey and minerals that exude a subtle decadence. Medium in sweetness and full in weight, ripe and lush flavours of yellow stone fruits, honey and a hint of caramel are harmoniously entwined and show excellent presence, enhanced somewhat by warm alcohol generosity and power. Soft and oily in mouthfeel, and restrained in acidity, there is an underlying phenolic line that carries the flavours and richness to a sustained, rounded finish. This is a full and powerful, but smooth, rich and lush Pinot Gris to match pates, rich Middle Eastern and Asian cuisine and semi-hard cheeses over the next 3-5 years." 5 Stars - Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

“reveals wonderfully expressive notes of ripe apricots, jasmine, pear juice, guava and mandarin peel with a whiff of allspice. The full bodied palate offers a fairly sweet style (31 grams per liter of residual sugar) with crisp, enlivening acidity, great concentration and a long finish. Drink this one now to 2014.” Rating 90 - eRobertParker.com

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
