The Gewurztraminer grape has a great affinity for the Johnson Vineyard site. Lower terrace 'G Block' is hard, stony ground, very free draining and a hard place to exist as a grape vine. G Block is small and contains at least five different clonal selections from France and Germany, and a similar number of root stock combinations. Each of these combinations adds a different flavour component and those selected for Envoy typically contain spice and weight.

Expert Reviews

"Produced from old vines on a very small site. Big, rich, mouth-filling Gewurztraminer with a creamy texture and an array of floral, spice and ripe tree fruit flavours together with a seasoning of nutty yeast lees character.

A complex and sophisticated wine."

Rating 5 stars/95 points - Bob Campbell

Brand Profile Image

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
