Expert Reviews

Fruit from the original Alsace clones from ‘Johnson Vineyard G Block’, hand-picked and fermented in small oak to 13.5% alc. and 20 g/L RS. Bright, even straw-yellow colour with light golden hues. This has an elegantly proportioned nose with an array of integrated aroma of exotic florals, honey, spices and savoury root ginger, that build in depth and intensity in the glass. Medium in sweetness, lively and bright, piquant flavours of rose-petal florals, spices, musk and ginger show on a smooth-flowing, unctuously-textured palate. The mouthfeel is soft, with ripe acidity providing good freshness and balance, enhancing the richness. The phenolic handling is excellent, combining with fine alcohol drive to carry the palate to a luscious, long and lingering finish of honey and ginger. This is an intensely flavoured, luscious and near unctuous, medium Gewurztraminer with ginger, honey and musky flavours. Serve with pate, semi hard cheeses and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 4-5 years. Rating 18.5+/20, 5 Stars - Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

Estate-grown in the Waihopai Valley, hand-picked and fermented in small oak vessels, this is classy stuff. Bright, light lemon/green, it is an enticingly perfumed and fleshy, medium style with concentrated stonefruit, spice and ginger flavours, showing lovely complexity and harmony. Delicious drinking from now onwards. Rating 5 Stars - Winestate Magazine Recent Releases (MAY-JUN/2014)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
