The Gewurztraminer grape has a great affinity for our site. Lower terrace 'G Block' is hard, stony ground, very free draining and a hard place to exist as a grape vine. G Block is small and contains at least five different clonal selections from France and Germany, and a similar number of root stock combinations. Each of these combinations adds a different flavour component and those selected for Envoy typically contain spice and weight.

Expert Reviews

Made from five different French and German clones selected for their spice and intensity. Hand-picked grapes, including a percentage of botrytis-affected berries, were fermented in small oak barrels. Rich and appealing gewurztraminer in a very Alsace style with great concentration and a welcome seasoning of spices. Layered and complex, it has 38 grams of residual sugar per litre but an impeccable balance of acidity and sweetness. Extraordinary power and length. Rating 96 - Bob Campbell MW, Top 12 NZ Gewürztraminers, Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine

"The bouquet is softly full and densely concentrated with warm aromas of stone fruit kernels, perfumed musk, exotic fruits and ginger with rose petal nuances in the background. Medium in sweetness and full-bodied, a smooth and seamless texture is the feature on the palate. Rich and luscious flavours of exotic fruits, creaming soda and musk build, resulting in an oily and unctuous mouthfeel. Though the acidity is soft, this has real presence and drive, and the palate flows to a powerful and long finish with superbly integrated flavours and rich componentry that exudes exotic floral and spice nuances. This is an outstanding, seamlessly smooth and rich Gewürztraminer to serve with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine, or with a variety of moderately firm cheeses over the next 4-5+ years." 5 Stars - Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

"A glorious example of this wonderful variety. If you have never a "spicy" then I urge you to have a go and you would be hard pressed to find a better one than this. Rich and weighty in the mouth with soft acidity and oozing with citrus, spice and lychee, it's a "must take" to a Chinese or Thai restaurant - and a fine partner with pungent cheese." Graham Stringer Top of its class - The Press, Christchurch

"Very 'complete' and harmonious wine, with an invitingly fragrant and complex bouquet. Full-bodied, peachy and well spiced, with excellent delicacy and richness. Already drinking well." 5 Stars - Winestate Magazine

Lush but finely tuned with plenty of the heady exoticism that makes gewurztraminer so appealing, plus crisp acidity and lovely fruit weight. Will convert non-believers and further enchant the converted. Emma Jenkins - Fashion Quarterly Entertaining

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
