Spy Valley Wines is so named for its proximity to an international satellite communications monitoring station in the Waihopai Valley...a spy base.

Not befitting the world of espionage, Spy Valley's wine has demanded global attention, the wine has been called "impossible to ignore" and the company among "the planet's 20 most notable new producers."

A creamy, balanced, rich in flavours wine with a nice non overpowering complexity, to enjoy now or keep for later.

Expert Reviews

Rich, flavoursome Chardonnay with white peach, nectarine, grapefruit, toast and hazelnut flavours. Mouth-filling wine with an appealing texture. Quite a vibrant and moderately complex style that promises to develop well in bottle. Bob Campbell, Rating 95

Winery Tasting Notes

Complex and brimming with white fruits, citrus and complex barrel derived aromas.

The firmness of an excellent vintage shows through with a long fine structure. A citrus fruit base underpins more layers of ripe peach, fig, and roast nuts.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, nestled on the terraces of the Omaka river are the vineyards of Johnson Estate.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub region, the Lower Waihopai development continued with fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies.

From vintage 2000 wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The brand name SPY VALLEY® is derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring station (spy base) nearby, part of the Echelon Global Network.

The Envoy range of wines was released in 2007 and represents small parcel wine production from specific vineyard sites off Johnson family estate vineyards. The wines are vineyard designated and represent winemaker interpretations of site and vintage.
