Expert Reviews

For an otherwise exemplary and progressive winery, I’m not sure why it is that Yalumba continue to persist with cork as a closure for all their top booze? There’s a 428 dozen of this particular wine made, all sealed with a bit of tree bark. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front (JUN/2009)

Brightly fruited and clearly defined, with mouth watering acidity providing a counterpoint to the vibrant red fruits; dry and pleasingly savoury on the finish. Rating 95 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (AUG/2008)

The wine will continue to delight for up to eight years.

Wine Background

The Melting Pot was named by one of the ‘Wild Bunch’ after a few drinks and a think tank. It reflects this blend being a ‘Melting Pot’ of flavours derived from an array of different Shiraz vineyards through Eden Valley as well as a few barrels of Mourvedre and Grenache for funk and spice. Ageing in old barrels for 12 months has allowed the true terroir of a very difficult vintage show how special Eden Valley is.

Winery Profile

Smith & Hooper wines are sourced entirely from two Wrattonbully estate vineyards - adjacent vineyard blocks previously owned by the Smith and Hooper families. These are premium red wines from exceptional vineyard sites where the winemaking philosophy is to let the terroir speak for itself - and it does. The elements of soil and climate at Smith & Hooper have transformed the noble varieties of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon into wines of finesse and distinction.
