Skillogalee Gewurztraminers are made in the classic style - aromatic and spicy with a crisp finish. Fruit quality was excellent after flavours were able to develop during the final few weeks of the growing season. Yields were low in 2011 due to an usually cold, wet season and the need to selectivley avoid substandard bunches. That said, whatever the fruit lacked in tonnage it made up for with pure Gewurtztraminer character and intensity.

Winery Tasting Notes

The wine shows the unmistakable floral, rose petal aromas and flavours of Traminer fruit, sometimes also reminiscent of passion fruit and lychees. The 2011 wine was fermented with light grape solids present, which creates a wine with silky texture and complexity.

Fodo Matching

It has strength of character without being oily or overpowering, making it an incredibly versatile food matching wine: top of the list should be lightly spiced, contemporary Asian food or flavoursome white meat dishes.

Cellaring Potential

For up to about 5 years will repay dividends.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Skillogalee has a small modern, winery, crushing only around 250 tonnes, giving us the opportunity to hand-make individual wines in small batches. Fruit handling and vinification are undertaken using the best of traditional and modern technologies - modern winemaking techniques for whites, to preserve the fruit aromas and flavours, and more traditional techniques for reds - the use of open fermenters and basket pressing to maximise flavour and colour without over-extraction. We focus heavily on gentle fruit handling throughout and our winery hygiene programs are meticulous. In this way, we use the minimum amount of sulphur to keep wines safe from spoilage.
