The fruit for this wine is grown at our two vineyards at opposite ends of the Heathcote region; Merindoc Vineyard at Tooborac in the south and the Willoughby Bridge Vineyard at Colibinabbin the north. Merindoc vineyard, with gravelly, low fertility ironstone soils provides minerality, structure and a cooler climate. Willoughby Bridge Vineyard is planted on the revered Cambrian rich red dirt, one of the oldest soil types in Australia and renowned for the production of intensely flavoured Shiraz. Another warm and dry vintage gave us low yields of concentrated flavours.

Expert Reviews

"Purple-crimson; the fragrant and complex bouquet has spice, licorice and polished leather overtones to the fine, red berry fruits; the light-to medium-bodied palate plays an encore of impressive length and finesse."

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2009 Heathcote Shiraz is a vibrant red with purple tinges, an indication of the impressive concentration of aromas and flavours to come.

The nose is redolent with dark berries, red fruits, cherries and spice.

The palate is a perfect balance of fruit, savoury notes, fine long tannins and acid. It does not have excessive ripeness, extraction or oak.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The Shelmerdine family has a long history managing high quality vineyards in Victoria, from the Nagambie Lakes region to the Yarra Valley and Heathcote. Each of our estate vineyards is managed to produce sustainable, low yields for the highest quality possible.

The variety of climates and soil types not only creates a diverse range of wine styles, it requires careful and adaptive viticultural expertise, to bring forth the best from each vine. Hand pruning, hand picking and training all give the vineyard workers intimate knowledge of every slope, and every clone. As is often said, the best fertiliser is the vigneron's footstep.

For three generations the Shelmerdine family has been among Victoria’s most prominent grape growers. Our vision is to embrace the honesty of the Australian terroir – the rocks, the soils, and the rhythm of the seasons – which impart their own identity into the wines.

Shelmerdine has vineyards in both Heathcote and the Yarra Valley showcasing the best varieties most suited to each region.
