The Adelaide Hills has now proven it can make truly exciting Shiraz. The key is careful site selection, low yields and restrained use of oak. Shaw + Smith Shiraz is a medium bodied cool-climate Shiraz, in which balance is more important than power.

Expert Reviews

Has established a consistent reputation as one of Australia's best cool climate shirazs, low yields (especially in 2014) and site selection all important. Handpicked, partial whole bunch and remainder whole berry open-fermented, matured in French oak (33% new) for 14 months. A super-fragrant red cherry bouquet, with notes of mulberry, licorice and plum joining the vibrant red fruits of the palate, backed by firm, precisely framed tannins. Rating 96 - Drink by 2030, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JUL/2015).

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2014 is a perfumed Shiraz with aromatics of florals and cherry.

The palate shows bright fruit in the red fruits spectrum and spice notes of dried herbs including thyme. Natural tannins and a graphite-like earthiness contribute to a savoury core that underpins the great depth and complexity of this wine.

Brand Profile Image

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realize a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, a single vineyard Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and more recently small batches of Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The Vineyards

M3 Vineyard

Shaw + Smith's 42 hectare M3 Vineyard at Woodside was planted in 1994 and takes its name from owners Michael and Matthew Hill Smith and cousin Martin Shaw. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with great concentration and fruit purity. All grapes are hand picked. The soils are sandy loam over red-yellow clay with some shale.Average altitude 420 metres.

Balhannah Vineyards

In 1999 Shaw + Smith bought this picturesque 46 hectare property between Balhannah and Hahndorf. In 2000 the winery was built and Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling were planted. All grapes are hand picked. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and shale. Average altitude 420 metres.
