Expert Reviews

Pale straw-green; whole bunch-pressed, barrel-fermented with wild yeasts, and partial mlf completed; the result is a very elegant and finely structured wine, with white stone fruit, melon and grapefruit flavours, the acidity perfectly balanced, the oak restrained. Rating 96 - Drink by 2020, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JAN/2013).

Opening with a well-defined nose of ripe peaches, apricots and pink grapefruit with touches of ginger, cashews, cedar and struck match, the light-bodied 2012 M3 Chardonnay shows a great intensity of stone fruit flavors running along a lively acid line. It finishes long and toasty. Rating 90+ - Drink by 2014+, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, (MAY/2014).

Brand Profile Image

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realize a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, a single vineyard Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and more recently small batches of Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The Vineyards

M3 Vineyard

Shaw + Smith's 42 hectare M3 Vineyard at Woodside was planted in 1994 and takes its name from owners Michael and Matthew Hill Smith and cousin Martin Shaw. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with great concentration and fruit purity. All grapes are hand picked. The soils are sandy loam over red-yellow clay with some shale.Average altitude 420 metres.

Balhannah Vineyards

In 1999 Shaw + Smith bought this picturesque 46 hectare property between Balhannah and Hahndorf. In 2000 the winery was built and Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling were planted. All grapes are hand picked. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and shale. Average altitude 420 metres.
