Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

Modern Pinot with characteristic red fruit aromas in the strawberry/raspberry/cherry spectrum.

Palate

Palate is mid weight, yet surprisingly supple and rich. Fruit focused at this stage and will develop additional layers with bottle-age.

Winemaking Note

Hand picked grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed into 2 tonne open fermenters. 4-5 days cold maceration preceeded fermentation with hand plunging 5-6 times per day. Malolactic fermentation and maturation followed in new (25%) and older French barriques.

Vintage Condition

The 2009 growing season in the Adelaide Hills began with a cool spring, which resulted in a relatively small but high quality crop. A short burst of heat in late January had little impact as it occurred 5-6 weeks before harvest. The autumn weather leading up to picking was cool and dry, which resulted in excellent flavour development and wines of freshness and elegance.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realize a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, a single vineyard Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and more recently small batches of Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The Vineyards

M3 Vineyard

Shaw + Smith's 42 hectare M3 Vineyard at Woodside was planted in 1994 and takes its name from owners Michael and Matthew Hill Smith and cousin Martin Shaw. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with great concentration and fruit purity. All grapes are hand picked. The soils are sandy loam over red-yellow clay with some shale.Average altitude 420 metres.

Balhannah Vineyards

In 1999 Shaw + Smith bought this picturesque 46 hectare property between Balhannah and Hahndorf. In 2000 the winery was built and Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling were planted. All grapes are hand picked. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and shale. Average altitude 420 metres.
