Expert Reviews

Pale straw-green the perfumed bouquet offers passionfruit, kiwi fruit and citrus aromas that set the scene for the palate, with a feline grace that would capture the most ardent despiser of sauvignon blanc. Mature vineyards and years of practice make this the most dependable Australian Sauvignon blanc. Winery Tasting Notes

The aroma has restrained Sauvignon grassiness and some lime, grapefruit and passionfruit notes.

The palate is fresh and lively with pure fruit varietal flavours and crisp acidity. A benchmark for Australian Sauvignon Blanc.

Cellaring Potential

Best drunk young.

Winemaking Note

Sourced from selected sites throughout the Adelaide Hills with over 50% from our own vineyards at Woodside and Balhannah. Whole bunches were crushed, chilled and pressed before fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. No malolactic fermentation as we look to protect fruit purity and natural acidity.

Vintage Condition

An unusually cool and wet vintage, with above average rainfall in February and March, provided conditions that were challenging for some varieties but which suited Sauvignon Blanc well. The long and cool ripening season gave us vibrant aromatics and crisp acidity.

Brand Profile Image

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realize a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, a single vineyard Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and more recently small batches of Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The Vineyards

M3 Vineyard

Shaw + Smith's 42 hectare M3 Vineyard at Woodside was planted in 1994 and takes its name from owners Michael and Matthew Hill Smith and cousin Martin Shaw. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with great concentration and fruit purity. All grapes are hand picked. The soils are sandy loam over red-yellow clay with some shale.Average altitude 420 metres.

Balhannah Vineyards

In 1999 Shaw + Smith bought this picturesque 46 hectare property between Balhannah and Hahndorf. In 2000 the winery was built and Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling were planted. All grapes are hand picked. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and shale. Average altitude 420 metres.
