The Rymill family has a rich history in Coonawarra, dating to Scottish-born John Riddoch who braved the harsh climate and trekked hundreds of kilometres, subsequently founding Coonawarra in 1890.

Rymill's winemaking team has taken up the challenge to develop and handcraft the very best expressions that the unique terra rossa soil and cool climate of Coonawarra can deliver.

Wines of finesse, power and balance – redolant of a thoroughbred horse.

Expert Reviews

Smells regal, if there’s such a thing. Lavender oil, fine mahogany, smoke, ripe black berries, fig and date dried fruit, bayleaf. Complex perfume. Courses across the palate with firm tannin, black fruit, squeaky acidity – a chewy wine that spreads across the palate with assertiveness. One for cellaring, but should drink well as it unfurls. Rating 91+ - Drink by 2025, Mike Bennie, winefront.com.au (APR/2015).

Winery Tasting Notes

The bouquet displays beautiful blackcurrant, blueberries and rich dutch cocoa from well-integrated oak.

At the forefront of the palate lively fruits of the forest burst in the mouth. These concentrated juicy flavours along with dark chocolate and liquorish make up a delectable and balanced wine which appeals to all senses. The intense flavours and strong mouth watering tannins run the length of the palate and make this wine incredibly smooth.

Food Matching

Best paired with slow cooked beef cheeks or rare chargrilled steak with rustic roast vegetables and a rich jus.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Peter Riddoch Rymill, the elder son of John and Eleanor Rymill, was born in 1940. A keen equestrian like his father, he competed in California and Ireland, retiring after he won the Australian Show Jumping Championship in 1965.

Peter married international Three Day Eventer and Show Jumper Judith Ritchie in 1964, and horses continued to play an integral role in their competitive and farming lives.

Peter and Judy diversified into viticulture in 1968 with an experimental vineyard, and six years later the family enterprise returned to Coonawarra when planting began on the Rymill Coonawarra Vineyards.

While Judy managed the farm, Peter completed a degree in Wine Science and a diploma in Wine Marketing before he began building the winery in 1990.

Here, the vision so characteristic of his great-grandfather, John Riddoch, and his father, John Rymill, is evident. And now, with his son John and daughter Lisa, a new generation is already involved, and the Riddoch Rymill family tradition continues.
