Expert Reviews

2010 Riposte The Sabre Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir Tim Knappstein’s Riposte pinots have consistently shown well in our tastings, and it was good to see that support continue when our guest panel members joined us. The Riposte narrowly reversed the decision of the Adelaide Hills Wine Show where the Shaw + Smith edged it out for the trophy. Its fragrance and opulent dark cherry palate won favour with the judges, as did the fine, firm tannins which provide balance and encourage cellaring. There are some ideal, cool pinot sites in the mosaic that is the Adelaide Hills, and perhaps a little too much media attention is focused on Victoria, particularly some small “cult” makers who are inconsistent at best. Outstanding The 2013 Winewise Championship Pinot Noir

Fresh, light crimson; the fresh, fragrant bouquet leads into a well-structured and balanced palate, with an array of small berry fruits and spices, the finish long and satisfying. Rating 93 - Drink by 2017 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (FEB/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

2010 was a very early season with a heatwave in November which accelerated vine growth and flowering. The weather then moderated and produced a cool,

sunny ripening period and excellent development of flavour, colour and tannins.

The Label

The dictionary definition of ‘Riposte’ (pronounced rip-posst) is comeback, reply, retort, or in the context of the sport of fencing a quick counter stroke. After over a decade of confusion about his name ‘Riposte’ was chosen as an appropriate name for a ‘comeback label’ by Tim Knappstein.

The Sword Name – ‘The Sabre’

A fencing weapon with a flat blade, used with cutting or thrusting actions; a military sword popular in the 18th to 20th centuries, mainly used by cavalry

It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks when the old dog in question is Tim Knappstein. With 40 years of winemaking and more than 500 wine show awards under his belt, Tim started yet another new wine life with Riposte, a subtle response to the various vicissitudes he has suffered in recent years. While having no continuing financial interest in Lenswood Vineyards, established many years ago,Tim is able to source grapes from it and also makes selections from other prime sites in surrounding areas. Exports to the UK, Canada, Holland, Singapore, Malaysia and China. James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
