The Grays Wine team are always on the lookout for your next wine discovery. Spain is no exception and we thought we’d start with Rioja. The Rioja wine region can be described as 'Spain in a glass'.

Rioja is made from Tempranillo grapes or a blend of varieties (with Tempranillo the dominant grape). Tempranillo is known for its structure and tannins. This is a wine perfect for a drinker who loves Cabernet but is also looking for the dominant cherry flavor that’s often present in a wine like Pinot Noir. The Spaniards are very proud of the indigenous Tempranillo grape because they have been making it into wine for over 2,000 years.

Transport yourself to Rioja with a glass of these Grays exclusive wines and some lovely thin slices of Jamon Serrano (the Spanish version of Prosciutto) and chunks of Manchego cheese. Yum! Simon – GraysWine Buyer

A fine collection of Spanish Red for you to sample with family and friends.

Winery Tasting Notes

Heredad de Baroja Crianza Rioja 2012

Ruby red in colour. A clean nose with notes of balsamic and fine nuances of plum and clean oak. Smooth, fruit and spice flavours with toasted oak. Complex and structured. A pleasant finish with red fruits and hints of eucalyptus.

Montebuena Crianza Rioja 2012

An intensely layered centre with mauve tones near the edge. Lively, clean and layered. Clean aromas characteristics of young tempranillo; aromas of wild fruits (blackberries, raspberries and sloes). Floral notes and a slight nuttiness on the finish. Shows a certain amount of character on the attack, although its acidity is offset by the warm, liqueur- like feel. On the finish, it is pleasant and a little treacly, and at the very end slightly satiny. The varietal character is noticeable once more on the palate, with hints liquorice and dairy products on the aftertaste.

Grays Tasting Panel Review

Heredad de Baroja ` Cuvée Especial` Rioja 2013

That’s good Tempranillo. Vibrant fruit jumps from the glass, cherries and plums are abundant. A good lick of oak gives an earthy aniseed character. Firm tannins and strong acidity with a long dry finish. More please.

Montebuena Rioja Madurado 6 Months Oak 2014

This is a lovely introduction to Spanish Rioja wines. Made from 100% Tempranillo grapes and matured in cellar for 6 months before release it displays an extremely inviting aroma of chocolate, red berries and spice that I found captivating. The palate is light to medium-bodied with flavours of bright red fruits and a dusting of spice. A velvety texture completes what I found to be a very approachable, drink now style that will put a smile on many faces.
