Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma/Palate

Roberto’s best value wine, this Nebbiolo Langhe impresses with its concentration of aroma and flavour, and its palate weight and power, matched by fine-grained tannins (for Nebbiolo) and fantastic length.

Cellaring Potential

The wine is excellent drinking now but will benefit from 10-15 years cellaring.

Food Matching

Decant ahead of service at 16 degrees Celsius with Fonduta con Polenta (soft Fontina cheese sauce with polenta) or Brasata al Barolo (beef braised in Nebbiolo).

Winemaking Notes

Fermentation is carried out in the traditional manner (in small volume stainless steel vats), with an exposed cap with frequent pumping over and manual punching down of the cap. The fermentation temperature ranges from 30-35 celsius, duration 15-20 days. The malo-lactic fermentation follows immediately. The wine is aged in French barriques (1/3 new) for a period of about 12-18 months. The wine is not filtered, but rather clarified with egg white in the traditional and natural manner. The wine is further bottle aged prior to release.

DOC/DOCG

Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) was the first Italian quality assurance label for wines in 1963, and in common with the French AOC, specifies the geographical area, permitted grape varieties and minimum alcohol level. It may also stipulate the production method, including minimum ageing.

Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) wines must meet all DOC requirements, must be bottled in the region of production, and are subject to a Ministry of Agriculture tasting. Each bottle will carry a numbered seal of approval.

Winery Profile

Tiny passionate Piemontese Barolo producer, Roberto Voerzio, consistently impresses the world over recent years with the quality of his wines. Roberto\'s decision to sacrifice quantity for quality, ultimately leading to the split with his family in the early 1980\'s, marked the beginning of Azienda Agricola Roberto Voerzio and his superb estate Barolo Wines, produced from three of La Morra\'s finest sites, La Serra, Cerequio and Brunate, as well as an intensely fruity Dolcetto d\'Alba and an aristocratic Super Piemontese Vino da Tavola called \'Vigna Serra\'. More recently Roberto has further acquired an established Nebbiolo vineyard within La Morra called Capalot.

Wife, Pinuccia and son Davide ably assist Roberto. Roberto winter prunes to 8-10 buds for Nebbiolo. Fertilisation, using only organic substances, is carried out annually. No chemical insecticides are used, and the earth is periodically worked. In July and August Roberto personally crop thins a total of three times to ensure the harvest is made of only the best and healthiest bunches, and to keep the yield low and concentrated. Fermentation is carried out in the traditional way with an exposed cap and frequent pumping and manual punching down of the cap for the duration of twenty days. The wines are aged in 50% new French barriques followed by 15-20-hectare litre Slavonian Oak barrels. The wines are not fermented.
