Expert Reviews

Rating 92 - Peñin 2016 (Spain)

"... a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Merlot. The wine has a terrific fragrance of unsmoked cigar tobacco, lavender, blackcurrants and kirsch liqueur. It is long, ripe, savory, full-bodied and multi-dimensional. This opaque, ruby/purple wine is a stunner and a great value. Drink it over the next 5+ years."Rating 91 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (March 2016)

Grays Tasting Panel Review

What a big, bold wine.

When opening the bottle first, the oak is strong, very powerful, with a lot of youthfulness.

After breathing for a bit however, the wine appears much softer, the oak is more integrated, the tannins are smoother.

Beautiful aromas of blond tobacco and toffee, leading to leathery, earthy notes with a pleasant vanilla touch.

In my opinion, a very 'old world' style wine, powerful, to be best enjoyed with some food.

What was I craving when tasting it? Skirt steak with a creamy mushroom sauce. Yum!

Winery Profile

Two cultures

and two different winemaking styles but with a common goal have brought together French winemaker and consultant Michel Rolland and Spanish wine visionary Javier Galarreta. They both believe that Spain has excellent terroir and extensive know-how to make premium wines with real projection in the international markets.

As one of the most influential

winemakers in the world, Michel Rolland has worked with winegrowers across 13 countries and has influenced many aspects of both the French and global wine industry. Since establishing ARAEX Grands Spanish Fine Wines in 1993, Javier Galarreta has applied his knowledge to place Spanish wines amongst the greatest. The firm, which was expanded in 2001 to add a wider range of Spanish wines to the original Rioja portfolio, is one the leading wine exporters in Spain. An innovative project: France meets Spain.
