Expert Reviews

Delicious white wine from Port Phillip Estate.

This is a pretty white wine. Floral. Redolent of honeysuckle. There are brine, nectarine, ginger and melon notes and a whisper of Turkish delight. It has a firmness, a backbone of acid, a semblance of chalkiness to its texture. But that fruit prettiness provides the spunk factor. Rating 91 - Drink by 2015, Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au (JUN/2014).

Pale straw-green; more welcoming than is usual for arneis, which may sound like a good thing, but in fact simply indicates a broad base of citrus characters, subtly different to those of other varieties, but not definitively so. You are left to wonder what might happen with time in bottle. Rating 88 - Drink by 2017, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2014).

Winery Tasting Notes

A bright pale lemon straw colour.

The nose is youthful with aromas of ripe pear, quince and hints of jasmine and ginger.

A soft and textured palate with undertones of ginger seen on the nose, combined with cinnamon spice and a refreshing lemon flavoured finish.

Brand Profile Image

The Port Phillip Estate winery, James Halliday's 2012 Winery of the Year, is situated at Red Hill in the heart of the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. Owned by the Gjergja family, winemaking is overseen by winemaker, Sandro Mosele.

Surrounded by mounds of native grasses and indigenous spotted gums, the new Port Phillip Estate winery, designed by Wood Marsh Architecture, emerges from the landscape as a dramatic curved sculpture made of rammed-earth. Inside, a large cellar door and tasting room, and a light-filled restaurant open out on to an expansive outdoor deck. Underneath, state-of-the-art winemaking facilities - a barrel room, bottling line, wine processing plant, cellaring and offices - share space with six luxury accommodation suites, complete with private decks. Views across the vines to the sea are panoramic.
