This exceptional vintage, was due to a cool summer and dry moderate autumn providing the ideal conditions for producing the late ripening Petit Verdot and the robust Shiraz. After many years of blending different varieties we have always thought that these two have worked well together when we bench tested, this our first release under our Black Label Vineyard Select series.

Expert Reviews

60% petit verdot from three blocks, and 40% petit verdot from four vineyards. An unusual medium to full-bodied blend, but works well in the terroir of McLaren Vale; luscious black fruit flavours are balanced by cedary tannins ex both fruit and oak; carries its alcohol with ease. Rating 92 - Drink by 2028 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEP/2015)

Winery Tasting Notes

Grape Varieties

The wine is a blend of 60% Petit Verdot from the Siberia, Erics and Connors block and 40% Shiraz from Bullrush, Bellevue, Loretta and Oakley vineyards.

The wine displays intense aromas of musk, black cherry, boysenberry and violets with hints of star anise and bramble.

The palate delivers cranberry, loganberry, spicy plum relish and musk, infused with some cigar box, raspberry and pepper. This big powerful wine is balanced by intense fruit, firm tannins and subtle oak maturation.

5-Star Winery - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition

In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.

Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.
